What Is a Loss Adjuster?

Let us explain what loss adjusters do, what role they play, and the route to becoming certified as one.

Becoming an Adjuster

Only those who have passed the adjusters test offered by the General Insurance Association of Japan, and have registered with the same organization, are certified as loss adjusters. Skill level ranked into Classes 1, 2 and 3. To be registered, you must pass the test in five subjects: insurance and general knowledge, architecture, electricity, machinery and bookkeeping. (For Class 3 this is three subjects: insurance and general knowledge, architecture, and electricity/machinery).

Those who hold certain public qualifications in addition to their adjuster certification can be registered as specialized adjusters. Such certifications include architects, building surveyors, construction management engineers and electrical chief engineers.
